2017 is already a packed year, with events and movements surrounding the MERCER. Here is a look of our documented appearances.
Leo: East Oakland Collective Presents: Taking Back Our Streets
Leo Mercer was invited as a panelist to talk about community safety and how the corruption of the Oakland Police Department plays a role in what we know as police brutality, and the divide between law enforcement, and the community.
LEO: RYSE Richmond Film Festival
Leo Mercer has done some work with RYSE Youth Center in the Past, and they invited him as a participant in their annual film festival, where he recieves the "Best Music Video" Award.
BLK GRL MGK | Orisha World Living Festival
The Prosperity Movement is a cultural organization that creates movements that allow all who listen to go back into their indigenous roots via media. They created and host the annual Orisa Urban World Festival. Determination Black Men's Group performs as a conduit to the many events that the festival holds.
Leo: Street Cred to Incredible: Alternatives 2017 Conference
Leo traveled with companions to Boston, Massachusetts to present a very relevant workshop entitled "Street Cred to Incredible". This workshop, created by Desire Johnson and the BIZ Stoop, talks about career exploration for young people of color in America.
Hip Hop 4 Change Presents: The LEO Party
Hip Hop 4 Change is a non-profit organization that focuses on pushing different views of hip hop from what is normalized. The LEO Part was a celebration for all the fire energy it represents. Local talent (who are Leos) performed and kept the party going with family and friends.
Oakland First Fridays
New Parkway Theater
United Roots funded a MERCER Music Video that was one of a few videos played at their 3rd annual unity festival, geared toward addressing mental health issues in our communities. Afterwards, The enormous #Oaklandfirstfridays crowd welcomed warmly with partying and performances.
Rally for Dajon Ford:
Valuable Asset to our Community
Dajon Ford was a young man sitting in jail for crimes he didnt commit. As an Oakland community, the MERCER, Urban Peace Movement, Staff from McClymond HS all showed up in support of his freedom.
#TWINSSOCIALs First Saturdays @ The Parliament
Twinssocial is a network of innovators who host and organize events in the bay area. This Open Mic and Fashion Show session was held at The Parliament in Oakland. For more information, go on instagram @twinssocial
Rafiki Coalition's 10th Annual Health and Wellness Summit
The Rafiki Coalition'S mission is to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and eliminate health disparities in San Francisco’s Black and marginalized communities. The summit included guest speakers, workshops, and performances from WolfHawkJaguar, DetermiNation, and OSHUN.
Bursting the School to Prison Pipeline: Youth Block Party
Urban Peace Movement and Peace and Action are both organizations that cater to the black and brown youth in the communities in Oakland. This block party was hosted for the youth of East Oakland, at Tassaforanga Recreation Center.
Leo: College Bound Brotherhood Graduation
The Marcus Foster Education Institute is an organization named after the first BLACK Superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District, and is an organization that narrates the success of young black men by providing scholarships for the young men to pursue their academic aspirations.
Leo: Free Our Dreams Conference in Sacramento
Leo traveled with peers from the Urban Peace Movement to talk to state legislators about passing laws that affect the youth and minorities in our communities.
MERCER | TFOHH @ Sideshow Radio
LEGVNDKLVN affiliates Dizz, Frank Vencci, Natural Keyz and Leo were invited to Sideshow Radio 94.1 KPFA to notify Berkeley listeners of the upcoming events and some already in effect.
